Background of the Study :
Digital communication has dramatically reshaped language use worldwide, and Nigerian social media users are at the forefront of these changes. Hashtags and emojis have emerged as integral elements in online discourse, influencing the syntactic structures of messages. In Nigeria, where social media is widely embraced, these elements are not only tools for categorization and sentiment expression but also serve as linguistic modifiers that affect sentence construction. This study investigates how hashtags and emojis interact with traditional syntactic patterns, potentially leading to new forms of expression. By examining a corpus of posts on popular platforms, the research aims to determine whether the integration of these digital symbols results in a convergence toward simplified syntax or encourages creative divergence from conventional language norms. Recent research suggests that such digital trends can modify the rhythm and flow of written communication, thereby impacting overall clarity and user engagement (Ibrahim, 2023). This study will document emerging syntactic innovations and evaluate their impact on language evolution in the Nigerian context, providing insights into the dynamic interplay between technology and linguistic change (Afolabi, 2024).

Statement of the Problem :
Despite the growing use of hashtags and emojis in Nigerian social media, there is scant research on their impact on syntactic structures. Existing studies have largely focused on the visual and emotive aspects of these elements, neglecting their potential to alter traditional sentence patterns. This oversight limits our understanding of how digital trends influence language evolution in Nigeria and impedes the development of educational frameworks that incorporate new communication norms. Without a clear analysis, it is challenging to gauge the long-term implications of these innovations on formal and informal communication styles (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To document syntactic changes associated with hashtag and emoji usage.

  2. To compare traditional syntax with digital-influenced structures.

  3. To assess the impact of these changes on communication clarity.

Research Questions:

  1. How do hashtags and emojis affect Nigerian syntax?

  2. What syntactic innovations emerge from their usage?

  3. How do these innovations influence message clarity?

Significance of the Study :
This study sheds light on the linguistic implications of digital communication trends, offering insights for educators, linguists, and media professionals. Understanding how hashtags and emojis alter syntax can guide the development of modern communication curricula and digital literacy programs, ensuring that language evolution is both recognized and effectively integrated into educational practices (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This research is confined to analyzing Instagram, Twitter, and other social media posts by Nigerian users. It does not consider other forms of digital communication or offline language practices.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Hashtag: A keyword or phrase preceded by a hash (#) used to index content.

  2. Emoji: A digital icon representing an emotion, object, or symbol.

  3. Syntax: The arrangement of words to form meaningful sentences.
